Protect Your Family! Must-Have Car Safety Features!

Even if you consider yourself to be a responsible driver, other people’s driving will always be unpredictable. However, with all the new safety features in modern cars, it’s much easier for you and your loved ones to feel safe on the road or in high-traffic areas. "My Car Does What?" is a national campaign created by the National Safety Council and the University of Iowa to help educate drivers on new vehicle safety features designed to help prevent crashes and save lives. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to instruct drivers on how to use these features, leading to safer driving and less accidents. Though some of these features have been around the automobile market for years, studies show that they are often not being utilized because consumers do not know how to use them correctly.

I’m sure you’ve heard of many of the new technologies being incorporated into cars, including those that warn drivers about potential hazards and threats that may cause accidents. The feature I’m focusing on today does just that. The Back-Up Warning feature alerts you of objects behind your car as you back out of spaces like driveways or parking spots. It works by using rear sensors to scan for objects behind your car and alerts you if one is detected. This not only protects your car from damage, but can also protect your children, pets, and neighbors from accidental injury.

Being an animal lover and mother, this is a must have feature when I am purchasing a new car. As much as we love our children and little furballs, they are not always as aware of their surroundings as we’d like them to be. The back-up warning feature makes it possible for us as drivers to be aware of their surroundings for them. One quick glance of Fido on the dashboard camera or a trigger of the motion sensor, and your car will alert you with a beep or vibration warning to inform you that something is blocking your path.

It is also super helpful for all of the drivers out there that don’t consider parallel parking one of their strong skills. This can prevent other drivers from causing damage to your car if you often utilize street parking. One shortcoming of this feature is that there are some objects that back-up warning sensors may NOT detect, especially if they’re located partially under the car. To play it safe, your best practice is to always be sure to physically check behind and under your car before backing out of a driveway or parking spot.

Safety features like the back-up warning increase the odds of protecting your car from damage and your family members (even the furry ones!) from vehicular injuries. The more consumers who utilize these safety features properly, will greatly reduce the amount of accidents on the road today and increase the safety for all drivers.

  6. Our car is fairly new and has a camera, but it does not beep. There was a situation where it would have come in handy.
